Recent weather events have taught us that being prepared for major disasters such as earthquakes or windstorms in an essential part of effective risk management.

Two tornados touched down in Midland, Ontario, on June 23rd causing an estimated $15 million in damage and prompting Mayor James Downer to declare a state of emergency. Area homes and businesses, especially along the King Street/Highway 12 area were damaged and a week later, the extent of destruction is still being evaluated. Loss of power, broken commercial buildings, and scattered debris continue to slow down business operations but fortunately, no serious injuries have been reported.

Coincidentally, the same afternoon, a 5.0 magnitude earthquake hit Ontario and Quebec with tremors being felt throughout southern and eastern Ontario, western Quebec, and some northern cities in the U.S. The worst was felt in both the towns of Bowman and Gracefield, Quebec, which experienced damage to several buildings including a road collapse.

Regardless of the magnitude of a natural disaster, it is important to have an emergency preparedness plan ready when crises arise.
