Skills and experience

As Chief Underwriting Officer, Marco Royer leads the Technical Underwriting function, including Pricing, Product Management, Sustainability Underwriting, Lines of Business Underwriting, and Underwriting Services. He works closely with business and technical leaders to enhance underwriting capabilities, support local decision-making, and deliver consistent outcomes for customers and brokers.

With over 35 years of experience in the European and Canadian insurance marketplaces he has held ascending levels of leadership responsibilities. Royer began his career with 18 years at Gen Re, where he led teams in Paris, London and Montreal and built a strong technical leadership in casualty, property and specialty lines. Following Gen Re, he joined Aon Benfield as Vice President and Casualty Specialist, later becoming the Quebec Regional Manager and Head of Facultative Operations, reporting directly to the CEO. In 2017, he relocated to the UK to be the head of the Canadian-London team for Aon Benfield, where he was responsible for all Canadian reinsurance placement in the London market.

Royer joined Zurich Canada in 2019 as head of Liability, Motor, EIL and Captives. Last year, he became the head of MGA, Programs, Captives and personal lines before accepting the role of Chief Underwriting Officer in February 2026.

Educational background

Royer is certified as a chartered financial analyst. He holds a Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Arts in economics from McGill University in Montreal.
